In February 2009, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 was passed and signed into law. The bill extends the tax credit for energy efficient improvements, such as garage doors in existing homes for 2009 & 2010. The maximum amount of credit for all improvements combined is $1500 over the lifetime of the tax credit period (2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010). Tax credits are more valuable than an equivalent deduction because a tax credit reduces taxes dollar-for-dollar, while a deduction only decreases the amount of income that is taxed.
To be eligible, homeowners must install an insulated garage door on a conditioned garage space that is attached to their principal residence. Sears insulated garage doors qualify for the energy tax credit under section 25C of the International Energy Conservation Code.
The new tax credits are available for qualifying door purchases "placed in service" from Jan. 1, 2009, through Dec. 31, 2010.
A homeowner's tax credit is based on the total material cost of the purchase (the cost of the installation does not qualify). The tax credit is equal to the sum of 30 percent of all the qualified energy saving improvements installed in an existing home in the calendar years of 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010. The maximum credit is $1500.
Your Sears Garage Door sales office can provide you with the required Manufacturer's Certification Statement to apply for your tax credit.
